In the dog house

In the dog house

I thought my dog looked guilty over the weekend - well, even more so than usual. Apparently domestic pets are the latest contributors to global warming - a large pooch may be responsible for up to a ton of greenhouse emissions each year. That's the same as a small family car. It's all in the meat they eat, I am told.

So, in the future, if you want to keep a dog you'll need to put it on your personal carbon account, and hope that your holiday in the sun this year doesn't take you over your limit. What fun!

Clearly, the boffins haven't visited my house - the dogs exist on leftover scraps and the cat lives on the rats it can catch. In any case, it doesn't take a genius to tell you the benefits conferred by pets on the nation are many. For a start, keeping us out of the clutches of the NHS by keeping us all fit.

They're also quite handy as unpaid shrinks - and security guards. And that's before we take into account the contribution to the economy of working dogs in the countryside. I wonder which political party would like to explain carbon accounts for pets to the UK's 20 million pet-owning voters?

I'm off to walk the dog!

What about foxes? Surely this is a good reason to bring back fox hunting?
