Rural Buildings Awards

The 2007 CLA Rural Buildings Award Scheme – in association with Knight Frank - is now closed to entries.

Thank you to all those who entered their buildings and conversions into this year’s scheme.

Shortlisting will take place on 13 June and regional and national judging will take place during the Summer.  You will be contacted by the regional judging team if you have made the shortlist to arrange a suitable date to visit the property.

For many years CLA's award scheme (formerly the Farm & Country Buildings Award) has been providing public recognition for landowners and farmers who “go the extra mile” in constructing or converting farm buildings, or buildings connected with rural business. The scheme recognised buildings which assimilated well with their natural and built environment and reflected genuine effort, not just in design, but in the use of materials and cost considerations.

Today, more and more rural building projects are at the forefront of rural diversification and play an important role in a developing rural economy. The CLA Rural Buildings Award Scheme 2007 – in association with Knight Frank – aims to showcase the very best new or converted rural buildings that reflect a wide range of diversification projects of high quality design and workmanship.

The range of entries is amply reflected by former award winners which include the conversion of an 18th century water-powered paper mill into a holiday complex, a redundant cowshed into two starter homes and a listed barn to a fitness/health studio. More unusual projects involve the conversion of a former village gas works to offices, a new garage originally developed from a forge and a coach house converted to a tea room.

The judges will be looking for innovative and progressive projects with special attention being given to entries that are sympathetic to their surroundings and have a low environmental impact. They should also make use of materials which are appropriate to their style and use and have high environmental standards.

Awards will be made regionally across both categories (new and converted buildings) and a further award – The CLA President's Award for the best rural building entered from all of England and Wales – will be made by the CLA President in the Autumn, selected from among the regional award winners.

The 2007 CLA Rural Buildings Award Scheme – in association with Knight Frank - is now closed to entries.
